Plymouth Hotels and Guest Houses

On the coast of Devon, Plymouth England has grown to the fifteenth largest city in England. Pylmouth's history dates back to the Bronze Age or earlier since there has been evidence of human remains in the area that date back to Palaeolithic times. Today Plymouth is a busy town.

A popular tourist stop is the Royal Citadel. Built in 1666 and overlooking Plymouth sound the gate was is made out of Portland stone. The Citadel itself is made of local limestone. For over 100 years the Citadel was used as a military defense. Today the military still use it, however, during the summer months tourists invade the Citadel with guided tours available for those interested in seeing the Citadel.

Another popular tourist stop is the Smeaton's Tower, the third of the Eddystone Lighthouses it resides now on Plymouth Hoe. The 72 foot high structure was constructed in 1756 and first put into use in 1759. It was used until 1877 to help guide ships. Today the tower is open to visitors who are up to the 72 foot trek to the top. Those that are, will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view of the sound and city.

The Mayflower Steps are located in the Barbican area of Plymouth. These are the steps used by the Pilgrim Fathers used to leave England to board the Mayflower to go to "the new world". These steps are still here where visitors can view them.

Another beautiful landmark that is popular visitor stop is the Saltram House. This George II era mansion is an original Tudor house. The main drawing room has been called one of Robert Adam's finest rooms. It was lived in until 1957 by the National Trust. Today visitors can enjoy the beautiful home and it's pleasant landscaping. The building is not just popular because of its history and beauty but it was one of the locations used in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility.

Many visitors to the Plymouth area often visit nearby areas. A popular visitation spot is the beaches of Cornwall. Here visitors can have some fun in the sun and sand and when they are done they can leave the hustle and bustle of the busy beachside towns and return to the quieter more relaxing atmosphere of Plymouth.
