In the Teignbridge district of Devon is the market town Newton Abbot. Newton Abbot is believed to have been settled by Neolithic people since traces have been found near Berry's Wood Hill Fort. It is certain that the area was inhabited during the 1 century as the Milber Down camp was built during this time. The Romans also occupied the area as coins and pavement has been found. The Normans also lived here building a motte and bailey castle on Highweek Hill, it was at this site the current village grew up around the castle. The town was also granted a market charter in the 1200s and since has been connected with a railway system and many other industrial sites.
Thanks to the history of Newton Abbot there are a wide variety of landmarks throughout the town. St. Leonard's tower is probably one of the oldest remaining sites in Newton Abbey. Built as part of the Chapel of St Leonard, the tower dates back to 1220. The main chapel was destroyed in 1836 but a plaque next to the tower remains. The plaque is the first declaration of William III, Prince of Orange in 1688. The plaque is dated 5th of November 1688 even though William didn't arrive in Newton Abbot until the 6th.
The Forde House is another popular stop. Built by Richard Reynell in 1610 this E-shaped house was thought to be in honor of Queen Elizabeth I. The home played host to many honored guests. In 1625 King Charles I was housed overnight as he made his way to Plymouth, he also stayed a few nights on his way home. Oliver Cromwell and Colonel Fairfax stayed here in 1646. Prince William of Orange also spent the night in this home when he was on his way to London for his coronation. While it's used now as an office and conference space visitors can still view it from the outside or enjoy the inside during special events.
Once you've spent some time seeing the historical sites, it might be time to let the family have a little fun. Kids of all ages enjoy the company of animals so why not go to Prickly Ball Farm. This hedgehog hospital spends its time helping the hedgehog in need. They educate visitors on care of the hedgehog and allow you to even see one close up. There is also a children's play area and wildlife garden to visit. Also kids can enjoy touching a variety of pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and gerbils. And if that's not enough then take them out to Big Barn to see miniature ponies, miniature dexter cow and even some free range chipmunks (no they don't sing). If the kids like they can help feed the pigs and chickens and might even collect some eggs. There is a coffee shop to feed the stomach and a gift shop to feed the imagination. It's a wonderful way to spend a day letting your kids get up close and personal with the animals.
