Okehampton Hotels and Guest Houses

The town and civil parish of Okehampton is located in the West Devon County of England. Bordering at the northern edge of Dartmoor and on the banks of the Okement River, Okehampton is a quaint little town of just under 6,000 residents. Thanks to its historic significance, especially with the medieval wool trade, Okehampton is home to many interesting historic places.

One of the first places is the Okehampton Castle. The ruins of this Motte and Bailey castle dates back to the late 11th Century. It is even mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. The Domesday Book puts the castle in the possession of the then Sheriff of Devon Baldwin de Brionne. While the original castle dates back that far the remains of the castle dates back to only the 14th Century. The castle was partially dismantled in 1539 after Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess or Exeter, (the owner at the time) was executed. The ruins of the castle have been painted and engraved over the years as a romantic ruin.

If you are interested in the history and heritage of the area then go over to the Museum of Dartmoor Life. Here you will learn about what it was like to live without electricity and central heating, and how clothes were made. There are many different exhibits for you to enjoy. See what tools locals used when farming their own lands. See what types of items they once had in their homes and items used to make their own clothes. Learn how to mint a medieval coin, which cannot be used as legal tender. This museum can give you and your family a whole new appreciation for the things you have available to you now!

If you are a nature lover then head out onto the Moor. A walk on Dartmoor will give you the adventure that you are looking for. You can enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area. There are even guided tours for you to enjoy so that you can learn about the area as you walk it.

If you are interested in a really stunning view of the moor, then hop on a steam train to Meldon. Here you can walk across the viaduct and see the most spectacular views of the moor. It is worth the extra trip out to see the views, be sure to take your camera.
