Morecambe is a civil parish and resort town located in the City of Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire. In 2003 the number of residents in Morecambe was roughly 45,000. Together with Heysham, a village nearby, the total population is about 51,400. The town faces the Morecambe Bay.
Morecambe is made up of several villages that were combined in 1889, Poulton-le-Sands, Bare, and Torrisholme. These areas of Morecambe are still called by these names. The town is a bustling, mid-twentieth century seaside resort. Morecambe gets most of it visitors from Scotland and Yorkshire.
The beauty contest winner, Miss Great Britain, lived there from 1956 to 1989. Morecambe has survived a few tragedies that have stunted its economy and tourism. They lost two different piers. One in 1978, the West End Pier, was washed away in a terrible storm. Then Central Pier, which had managed to survive a 1933 fire but was finally washed away in 1992. In recent years there was concern over the West End's decline that lead to more investment in the area to produce a regeneration.
Two local newspapers, The Daily Telegraph and the Times, each ran an ad of two pages around Easter of 2006 that focused on the revival plan going go in Morecambe. Margee Ltd., a local fashion store since 1933, bought back the Miss Morecambe beauty contest in 2006 after the contest had been done away with in the mid-80s. This same year the Midland Hotel opened up. RNLI chose Morecambe as the place to put it first life-saving hovercraft in operation, The Hurley Flyer, in December 2002. The residents immediately began to complain about the craft so it was removed from the beach.
In February 2004, in Morecambe Bay, saw a great loss of life when shellfish harvesters, that were Chinese immigrants, drowned. The cities major shopping center goes from the Arndale Shopping Center to Central Drive Retail Park. There are includes two different markets, The Morecambe Sunday Market and The Festival Market. The Apollo Cinema is also located there. The White Lund Industrial Estate is the home to Morecambe's industrial and manufacturing industries.
