Lancaster Hotels and Guest Houses

On the Lune River is the city of Lancaster. Even though there is no actual proof of the town's existence it is believed to have been settled and continuously inhabited from somewhere between the 5th and the 11th century. Little is known about the area during that time but because of its location on the fringes of what was the kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia it is reasonable to conclude its existence. It does appear in the Domesday tome as Loncastre in 1086. Thanks to its rich history it has many interested places for visitors to enjoy.

One of the first things people want to see is the Lancaster Castle. Built in the 13th Century the castle stands on the original site of a Roman garrison. The building was enlarged by Queen Elizabeth I and is now home to the courts and is a prison. The castle is open to visitor but not all the castle can be accessed. Since a large area is still used as a prison and there are two court sessions held here daily it is understandable. The areas of the castle that are available to be viewed are filled with many medieval tapestries. It is rare to see so many medieval fabrics so well preserved so it is a definite must when it comes to sights to see. Please note, if you have children they are welcome to view the castle as well, but please keep them under control, if they become to boisterous or noisy you may be asked to leave.

If you are interested in shopping, then you will have a good time in Lancaster. There are many boutiques and stores along the high street. While you stroll the pedestrian center you can also find many tasty treats as well. There are out of the way cafes, coffee shops and restaurants for you to enjoy. You will find plenty of unique items to take home with you at the end of your stay.

If you are interested in maritime history then go to the Maritime Museum. Located in St George's Quay you can learn all of the maritime history of the Lancaster area. It will help bring the past to life, especially for the kids. You don't have to worry about them touching things here with the many hands-on exhibits; kids will enjoy learning about the marine history of the town.

Of course, for those who are looking for something a little more outdoorsy then there is Williamson Park. Here you and your family can enjoy a day in the sunshine. While you are here you can visit the Butterfly House and see the many different butterflies local to the area. It is a splendid sight especially when seen through the eyes of a child.

Lancaster is also home to many museums for your family to enjoy. At any one of these fantastic spots you can learn the history of the town and the area. Learn about the Roman times and even about the town's own history for being a "Hanging Town" and the witch trials that took place back in the 1600s.
