Louth Hotels and Guest Houses

Louth in Lincolnshire is also called the Capital of the Lincolnshire Wolds and is located were Barton Street, an ancient trackway, crosses the River Lud. Where Eastgate is crossed by Greenwich Meridian is the location of a plaque that sits on the streets north side, close to the Northgate junction. The town's history is noted for the town being the place of the beginning of the Lincolnshire Rising, the forerunner of Pilgrimage of Grace, in October of 1536. It all began in the St James Church in Louth.

In May of 1920 the town had a massive flood that killed twenty-three. There are many plagues of stone throughout town to show how high the seawater got to. There were also floods in June and July of 2007 but they were not as devastating. Most of the center of town is lined with brick building that dated from the 17th to the 18th Centuries. St. James' Church dominates Louth's skyline with a spire that reached two-hundred and ninety-five feet.

While not the tallest church in the United Kingdom, it is the tallest Anglican parish church. The museum in Louth has a Panorama Gallery that displays two replicas of William Brown's Panorama of Louth. It is back-lite and shows Louth in 1844 from the top of the churches spire. It gives a unique perspective and vivid showing of the businesses, streets, homes and people of Louth. It also shows the outlying landscape all the way to the North Sea in the east, Humber estuary to the north and beyond.

The church was originally constructed in 1515.

Louth is well known for its wide variety of shops a retailers plus their specialty grocery stores. Just off the Market Place is a department store call Eve and Ranshaw that dates back to 1781. Also Eastgate is noted for its range of shops, which include a butcher that has won awards as well as a Dragonfly shop. Louth, like its independent retailers and major ones have failed to make a major impact on the town. There was a Woolworth's store there until 2009. Argos and New Look have small outlets there but they do not do much business.
