Cleethorpes was created when three smaller villages, also know as thorpes, were combined. The thorpes were all part of the Clee parish. While there are remnants of people there as early as the Bronze age the town was not believed to be resided in on a permanent basis until the Danes showed up in the 6th Century and larger communities of people being established in the 9th. The town then grew to be a fishing village.

Cleethorpes was developed as a holiday resort for health in the 1820s with it medicinal waters and sea baths. The Cleethorpes Encloser Bill of 1842 split up over 2000 acres of land to owners and eight roads were built. Its resort qualities were at the peak by 1848 with many lodging facilities being built. When the railways came to town the resort was built up even more. In 1873 Cleethorpes Pier was established and in 1855 a promenade.

Passing though town is the Greenwich Meridian and signs display unique distances in miles instead of kilometers such as the North Pile at 2,517, the South at 9,919 and New York at 3,481 miles. The resort is set on the sea and is connected to close by Grimsby. The Olde Clee and Weelsby sits in between the two areas to separate them.

Cleethorpes is known to locals in Humber by Meggies but where the name was originally established is unclear. One theory is that Isaac's Hill's highest point was once named Meg's Island and another is because the amount of money that is needed to get to the town by tram from Grimsby is a meggie. Meggies is not only what the town is referred to but its residence as well. The town is also called down beach.

Even though Cleethorpes is described as a seaside resort, in reality, it is located on the estuary of Humber. The supposed sea is really just the mouth of the river. The people who bathe there have hundreds of yards between them and the sea that are covered by mud when the tide is low. The shopping center for the town is located on St. Peter's Avenue. The shipping traffic that comes and goes from Humber can be seen easily from the sea side as it heads to several different ports.
