The cathedral city of Lincoln in Lincolnshire England is home to many medieval and historical attractions. Thanks to the beauty of the architecture and the history of the town itself, Lincoln is a bustling town even if isn't a metropolitan area. The history of this city goes all the way back to the ice age, where it is believed that the inhabitants lived in round wooden dwellings.

Visitors who come to Lincoln come for the history and architecture that is left behind. There are many historical sites to be seen during your stay. Among the most popular stops is, of course, the Lincoln Cathedral. The original cathedral was built in 1092, and has been rebuilt numerous times. The first rebuilding came in 1185 after a earthquake caused fire destroyed most of the building. Each time the cathedral has been rebuilt the eastern side becomes more and more massive. The crossing tower, which is said to stand 160 meters, has also grown from one spire to three. This cathedral is credited as being the largest cathedral in all of Europe, its cross towers spires have been said to have surpassed the great pyramids in height.

Another major stop in Lincoln is Lincoln Castle. This castle built in the eleventh century by William the Conqueror actually sets on the foundation of the former Roman fortress. The castle is one of the better preserved castles in the United Kingdom and was used as a court of law and prison even into modern times. Now it is a museum and is open for the public to tour. This Norman Castle is home to one of the surviving original copies of England's Magna Carta, there are only four original copies of this document still in existence today. Other areas of interest in the castle are the remains of Eleanor Cross, parts of the prison and a Bust of King George the Third originally from Dunston Pillar.

For those who are interested in the town's history it is time to visit the Museum of Lincolnshire Live. This museum is a collection of items that reflect the people and area of Lincolnshire from 1750 to today. The exhibits include domestic, industrial, agricultural, community, and commercial life exhibits. The military buff will be interested in the fact that that the museum is housed in the former barracks of the Royal North Lincoln Militia, and was built back in 1857.

For those that enjoy a good deal, visit Lincoln in December. This is when they hold their annual Lincoln Christmas Market. This four day event not only has many goodies on sale for Christmas but has fun events such as classical music and rock concerts, beer barrel rolling and a Ferris wheel. The market is set up so that you travel around the main historic center in a circular one-way direction, pedestrian only. This route also includes passage through the Lincoln Castle grounds without an entry fee, which is not something you normally get to do.

Lincoln is a town steeped in intriguing beauty and history.
