Salisbury is a cathedral city located in Wiltshire England. Once called New Sarum, Salisbury was established in 1220. There has been evidence of the Iron Age and was once inhabited by Romans. There are plenty of things for visitors to see and things to do while in this historic town.

One of the first stops that most people make is the Salisbury Cathedral. Built in originally between 1075 and 1092, and has a spire that soars a awe inspiring 123 meters above the town. The cathedral is sports the Early English Gothic style of architecture and over the years it hasn't had any major additions. Inside the church you can view not only the beautiful architecture but one of the four best preserved copies of the original Magna Carta (circa 1215). You can also head up to the roof space if you don't mind the climb. With 332 steps to the base of the spire you need to be in reasonable shape before tackling this tour. That being said the views from the spire are absolutely breath taking and worth the trek.

For family entertainment, you might want to check out Longleat. Longleat can give you and your family a nice day out with wildlife. Visitors can play with baby lambs, take a pony ride, or groom a donkey. Families can enjoy this outdoor park by spending the day with and learning about many of the different animals housed there.

There are also many stately homes and gardens for families to explore. The Stourhead House and Garden is one of the most popular of the bunch. The house and garden are open to the public from March to October. The breath taking garden is can be wandered and enjoyed at your leisure, making it a place you can truly relax at. The house is Palladian mansion with a library and exquisite art collection. To really enjoy the beauty of the area you need to climb the 205 steps to the top of King Alfred's tower. There are also Iron Age hill forts to explore.

Probably the most famous site in the Salisbury area of England is Stonehenge. Erected sometime between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC Stonehenge is an architectural wonder. Set in perfect geometry and having unique jointing and strangely shaped stones, it is still considered to be one of the most amazing feats in engineering history. Thousands of people come from all over the world to check out this wonder. It's still uncertain of why Stonehenge was built but there are remains of domestic and ceremonial structures located around the monument, many of which predate Stonehenge itself.

Salisbury is a place steeped in history, architecture and beauty.
