The quaint market town of Ross-on-Wye is located in Herefordshire on the River Wye. This quiet little town of less than 12,000 people is known best for its many antique shops and the market square.

Many don't realize though that Ross-on-Wye has been credited with being the birthplace of the British tourist industry. In 1745 Dr. John Egerton began taking friends across the valley on boat trips. Because of the beauty of the valley and many sites to visit those that were able wanted to view these picturesque sights. By 1808 there were eight boats that made regular trips along this area for those who wanted to tour the sights of Ross-on-Wye.

Many of the sites are still popular tourist stops. Goodrich Castle is one of these stops. Built on a rock above the River Wye this twelfth century castle, made of red sand stone, was made for the de Valence family. What began as a simple tower became a great strong hold surrounded by four huge walls with three cylindrical towers as three of the corners, the fourth corner was the gatehouse. Even though many of the buildings have been well preserved through the years it was originally much taller than the 60 feet that it is today. Tourists can visit year round except for the Christmas holidays, December 24-26 and New Year's Day.

Also located above the River Wye is the How Caple Court Gardens with are another great tourist location. Here you can wander eleven acres of gardens while enjoying the serene setting. There are formal terraces, roses, water features, trees, shrubs, and yew hedges. There are also less formal areas of the garden as well as a lily pond. The court also has a nursery that sells roses and herbaceous plants as well as a dried flower factory outlet.

For those looking for something to do and not just something to see there are plenty of activities for you to enjoy during your stay. For those who want to get out on the water, try canoeing. The River Wye has been called one of Britain's most scenic rivers and it would be a shame to miss out on this unspoiled beauty from the viewpoint of the river itself. If you are not an expert at canoeing fear not, the Ross-on-Wye river area is very calm and slow moving waters and are a great way for you to enjoy exploring the area. For those that like a little bit of a challenge and are more experienced can check out the white waters of Symonds Yat.

There are other outdoor activities to enjoy as well. There is climbing, bowling, golfing, and horseback riding.

With beauty, serenity and lots of activities almost anyone can find something to enjoy during their stay at Ross-on-Wye.
