The town of Keswick is a great of many things and it is easily one of the most unique towns in England and yet, it is still one of the hardest towns in the country to describe singularly. It is one of the most visually stunning and beautiful towns in a continent filled to the brim with picturesque beauty but not all of its history has been as beautiful. The town is one of the first industry and mining towns and yet it looks nothing like many of its ilk that have become sprawling metropolises. Keswick is a town that relies heavily on tourism and yet it doesn't seem to actively take measures to pull in as many visitors as possible, especially if one looks at the town's past. At the end of the day, it can only be said that Keswick is Keswick and no other town is.

With a sparse population that barely tops out at over five thousand, Keswick easily maintains many of the beautiful natural features that complement it so well. From the famed Derwent Water to the incredibly pristine Bassenthwaite Lake, Keswick is no stranger to divine waterways. The incredible Lake District National Park also makes up a large part of the surrounding area and thus Keswick practically lives and breathes the glory of nature. Keswisk is also connected to the famed Lake Windermere and the town of Windermere by way of the A591 road. In spite of this beauty or, perhaps, because of it, Keswick can't be described as the most environmental of cities. As early as the 1500s Keswick was the site of mining operations wherein much of the flora nearby was destroyed in an effort to leach the earth of various minerals like graphite and coal. Keswick was in fact the first town in the history of the world to begin crafting graphite pencils; the material still used in pencils to this day. This quickly gave Keswick an edge on the rest of England and even more advanced mining operations were put underway as Keswick saw itself grow into a reputable pencil town. It was only in the last few years that Keswick gave up its famed pencil factory.

Another first in the history of the world occurred in Keswick although it is far less wholesome than simply the first pencil. Keswick was the first place in Britain where police used riot gear in order to settle a dispute. This has made Keswick an interesting place in the eyes of police and fans of police but not as interesting to activists no doubt. All the same, such a legacy most definitely does not detract people from visiting the town and in many ways tourism is the main and most important industry in Keswick these days. Though a great bit of this has to do with the beauty of the area, it can be argued that the manmade spectacles that occur in Keswick have something to do with it as well. For one, the famous Keswick Film Festival that is held every year regularly draws thousands for good reason; it is among the most important film events in the industry. There is also a yearly jazz festival and beer festival that are both major attractions for people all around England. In short, Keswick is able to have its cake and eat it too; it can boast of its natural beauty all while holding manmade events. In the end, it must be said that everybody has their own Keswick and that more than anything helps to sum up the town into one singular opinion.
