The village of Coniston is located in the southern part of the Lake District National Park. Coniston lies in between Coniston Water and Coniston Oldman. The village started out as a farming village but also had copper and slate mines that were very prosperous. However, thanks to the construction of a branch on the Furness Railway the area began receiving more and more tourists during the Victorian era. While the town is not as popular of a tourist stop as it used to be there are still some popular things for people to do during their stay here.

Thanks to its setting, Coniston has become a popular spot for those enjoying rock climbing or hill walking. There are several areas to walk around the village. The hills and mountains of Furness Fells are located so close to Coniston that they are often called Coniston Fells. These fells can rise from the small 30 meters up to the tallest at 2000 feet. This height is claimed by Coniston Old Man. You can find many simple walking paths here or you can try to conquer the Old Man. Either way if you plan on hiking out into the countryside, be sure to take a map and a compass with you so that you will know where you are going.

Another great walking area is Grizedale Forest. This area of woodland is located just east of Coniston Water. There are several hills, small tarns and the settlements of Satterthwaite and, of course, Grizedale. There are color coded footpaths and mountain biking trails for the nature lover to enjoy. There is also a visitor center that has a children's play area, cafe and shop, and educational center. If you plan on being out in Grizedale Forest overnight there is a 16 bed hostel available for you to take advantage of. As you wander the forest trails keep your eyes peeled. There are some 90 sculptures that are scattered throughout the forest. Each one is made from some naturally occurring material such as wood or stone. They are worth looking out for.

If you are looking for some good rock climbing then go to Dow Crag. This fell that is located near Coniston is one of the best places to go rock climbing. The name Dow Crag actually only refers to the eastern face of the fell. It is the side that is most often climbed.
