The city of Derby has traditionally been the economic powerhouse and of the English Midlands due to its strong industrial base and the presence of a number of heavy industries present within it. In fact, it is often claimed that it was Derby that actually gave birth to the Industrial Revolution and there is compelling evidence to support and corroborate this belief because a number of technological processes which were to become mainstays for the rest of the nation were born here. It was here that the very first silk mill was developed, and whilst the technology was eventually transplanted across the rest of the country, Derby always enjoyed that advantage over the rest of the providers.

Derby Cathedral is definitely worth a visit due to its gorgeous architecture and dramatic interior which captures the heart alongside the mind.

It should be noted that the cathedral that survives to this day is not the original structure, as it was built upon circa the 14th century. Whilst the cathedral happens to be the smallest cathedral in the whole of England, it has managed to make an important name for itself in another, more quirky manner: it is now the home of a number of pedigree falcons which have taken refuge in its confines. Charmed by the presence of their new feathered friends the curators of the cathedral have installed web cameras in order to enable them to view the health and well being of the birds.

Derby Arboretum is also worth a visit with its landscaped gardens and gorgeous shrubbery, it is a perfect way to whittle away an afternoon in the peace and tranquility of nature, and the success of the Derby Arboretum is made all the more poignant by virtue of the fact that for many years it was closed off and remained derelict.
