Located at the highest elevation of any other marketing town in England is Buxton. This spa town is located on the River Wye. Overlooking the Axe Edge Moor this town has a history of being a spa town thanks to the geothermal spring. With a constant temperature of 28 C (82 F) this spring is located behind the Eagle Parade and is then piped to St Ann's Well. Buxton has many places and attractions for visitors to enjoy.

One of the attractions that many people enjoy visiting is the Poole's Cavern. This extensive limestone cavern is believed to be around two million years old. The public region of this cavern is around 310 meters in length. With four chambers that are a part of the 310 meters and features large stalactites/stalagmites with interesting names such as the 'Filtch of Bacon' or 'Mary Queen of Scot's Pillar'. There are stalagmites that are even a poached egg color, which are located in the Poached Egg Chamber. Some of the area is wheelchair accessible so that many more people can enjoy the caverns.

For those who enjoy culture they should check out the Buxton Opera House. This nine hundred seat opera house was originally designed and built in 1903 and has been renovated several times. Visitors can enjoy a variety of different theatre and music festivals throughout the year. The Buxton Opera house has been home to the Buxton Festival since 1979 and is one of the largest based opera festivals in the United Kingdom.

For those interested in the history of the Peak District then you should visit the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. The Museum and Art Gallery has exhibits that cover the archeology, geology and the history of Buxton and the entire Peak Area. These exhibits as well as the rotating exhibitions can offer visitors great insight into the lives and history of this great area.

The Dome is another great tourist stop. The Dome was originally built as a stable for the Duke of Devonshire's horses. Now The Dome is the location of the new campus of the University of Derby in Buxton. This historical building, even if it is considered a place of learning now, an interesting site to see and enjoy the architectural prowess that was back during the days it was used as a simple stable and housing of servants of guests.

But visiting Buxton isn't all sites and stops there are also many activities to enjoy. Thanks to the caves in the area those that are interested in exploring the under area of Buxton can do so. Caving is a popular past sport in the area and visitors that enjoy that sort of adventure should be sure to investigate these unique caves.
