The small market town of Bakewell is located in Derbyshire, England in the Derbyshire Dales district. Bakewell is the only town that is part of the Peak District National Park. The town has become known for it Bakewell Pudding, a local confection. The 2001 Census had Bakewell's population recorded as 3,979. It is located within close proximity to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, local tourist attractions.

While evidence of earlier settlements has been discovered, what is known as Bakewell today is estimated to be founded during the Anglo Saxon times. During this time the town was part of Mercia, an Anglian kingdom. In 920 the Bakewell Parish Church was started and built. There is a 9th Century cross located in its yard. The current church was completely built during the 12th and 13th Centuries. William Flockton rebuilt the church entirely in the 1840s.

The Bakewell market was started in 1254 and the town became a trading center. During the 13th Century a bridge with five arches was built over the River Wye and is one of the only surviving pieces from this time period. In 1697 a bath house was constructed after a chalybeate spring was found which lead the town to be developed into a spa town during the 18th Century. Most of the town was rebuilt during the 19th Century following the construction of the Lumford Mill in 1777 by Richard Arkwright.

Many local and international tourists come to Bakewell. The market is held on Mondays making this a very popular time to visit the town. There is a cattle market in an agricultural center that was built across the river and is separate from the main area of town. A medium stall market takes place in the town's center. Due to the tourist nature of the town is has a larger than normal center.

The beautiful public park that is located along the River Wye comes from a source new Buxton. The Peak District National Park Authority is a major employer for the town. Its base is located on Baslow Road in the Alderan House. The main purpose of the National Park Authority is to conserve and enhance plus promote the enjoyment and understanding of the local area.
