Buckingham Hotels and Guest Houses

The town of Buckingham is located in northern Buckinghamshire. This moderately sized town was founded back in the 7th century as by the Anglo Saxon leader Bucca. This town was first located at the top of the Great Ouse River, where the Hunter Street campus of the University of Buckingham is located. From the time it was settled until the 11th century the town went back and forth between the Saxon and Danes. It wasn't until 1554 that the town received its charter from Queen Mary. Today the town has many interesting places for people to visit.

One of the most popular places to head is the Buckingham Chantry Chapel. This chapel, which is now owned by the National trust, is the oldest building in Buckingham. Built in the 15th century the chapel is not only noted for its age but for it's ancient architecture as well, in particular it's Norman doorway. The chapel has been restored in 1875. Even though the building was once used as the Royal Latin School today it's open to visitors to enjoy.

Another exciting stop is the Old Gaol Museum. This museum is located on Market Hill and the architecture is enough of a reason to head to the site. Once a prison this building was built in 1748. This Gothic style jail has been everything from a prison, to a police station, even an antique store and a cafe. In the early 1990s A trust took over and opened it as a museum. Today you can see exhibits that span the history of the town as well as the history of the prison. Enjoy looking into the cells and seeing what it was like to be a prisoner back when the building was built.

St Bernadine is a good church to visit if you interested in seeing church architecture. Built in 1892 this beautiful church first held it's mass on the Feast of Ascention. Even though only a few Catholics lived in the Buckingham area there were twelve Baptisms by 1900. The parish has grown quickly since and the church, while it has undergone many renovations is an absolutely beautiful church. From the wooden beams to the ornate alter, anyone interested in church architecture.

Thanks to the beautiful countryside that is the setting for Buckinghamshire many people find that wandering out into the countryside.
