Gloucestershire is home to a terrific amount of beautiful waterside towns and villages and one of the most popular areas in this venerated county is the plethora of hills known as the Cotswold's. The beauty of these hills can not be overstated by even the most liberal of espousers. Many people call the Cotswold's the "Heart of England" and it is hard to argue the notion when the Cotswold's have been officially designated by the government to be an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty". Within these gorgeous hills lies a city known as Bourton-on-the-Water. The moniker was rightly bestowed on the city in light of the fact that a gorgeous stream runs through Bourton and a large bridge spans the town as a necessary means of crossing said stream. All the same, this is less of a hindrance and more of a beautiful feature of the town and many have given the town the nickname, "Venice of the Cotswold's". A city would have to be pretty damn beautiful to be noticed for its appearance against the background of the already well-known gorgeous landscape of the Cotswold's and Bourton-on-the-Water easily earns its stripes in this category.
Bourton-on-the-Water isn't what you would call a large town by any means considering the fact that it only has about four thousand inhabitants but this doesn't account for the many tourists that flock daily to the gorgeous burg. There is more to see than just the natural features, though, and in this respect Bourton-on-the-Water may boast some of the most unique tourist attractions in England. For one, there is a 1:9 scale model replica of the town that somehow has become one of the most popular attractions in all of Gloucestershire. This stunning model is definitely a calculated work of art, though, and it deserves at least a little appreciation. It was built in 1937 and one must remember that even a small village is still pretty sizable when it is nine times smaller and must be built by hand. Within this replica is actually another replica that is of course nine times smaller yet made fully to scale. Unfortunately, though, there is not a still smaller replica contained within that replica and so on and so forth until the universe twists inward upon itself.
Bourton-on-the-Water also has something known as "The Dragonfly Maze" which is actually far more fun and interesting than one might think and there is also a yearly medieval football competition that regularly draws the entire town to the River Windrush. Here the players use the waterways and bridges as goalposts and the entire affair is a wet, muddy, free-for-all that has got to be seen to be believed. Bourton-on-the-Water of course has many beautiful museums that pay tribute to the Cotswold's and the town has its fair share of stunning hotels so that people with more discriminating tastes aren't left out. The real heart of this "Venice of the Cotswold's", though, is found within each and every one of the unique and fascinating citizens that make up this one of a kind.
