Located on the River Severn and River Avon, is the English town of Tewkesbury. Built around the Abbey in the late1000s the town has been home to many historic sites and landmark having been the center of a couple epic battles. Thanks to its rich history Tewkesbury has many things for tourists to see.
The Tewkesbury Abbey is a fine example of a Tudor building. This building is the second largest parish church in the county of Gloucestershire. The church was originally built in the late 1000s, around the same time as the town. At the time of its consecration the building was used as a Benedictine monastery today it is part of the Church of England and is home to one of the largest collections of medieval church monuments after Westminster Abbey.
Also located in Tewkesbury is the oldest public house in England. The Black Bear, also known as Olde Black Bear was established in 1309. Still open today, visitors can go to the Black Bear for lunch, dinner or just a pint of their favorite ale. The Black Bear hosts two quiz nights a week and a variety of other entertainment throughout the year, especially on bank holidays. If you are looking for a place to have a private party, don't hesitate to have it here, even if you have children. The Black Bear can cordon off an area for you and children are welcome in the restaurant until 9 pm every night.
The Tewkesbury Museum can give tourists a feel for the history Tewkesbury. Here you can view many historical artifacts from the town and surrounding area. Currently they have exhibits for the Healings Flour Mills, Battle of Tewkesbury and a 1950s model fair. They will soon have exhibitions about the Roman influences of the town among others.
Another popular stop is the John Moore Museum. Built as a tribute the great naturalist and writer John Moore, the museum actually consists of two buildings. The larger building is the Natural History building that is home to many types of mammals and birds that are native to the Tewkesbury or Gloucestershire area. The smaller of the two buildings is the Merchant House. Here visitors can see the beautifully restored 15th century home complete with garden. You can visit on living history days to get an idea of what life was like back in the days of John Moore.
Visitors interested in the history of the town need to visit the Heritage Trail. This trail contains over 350 buildings listed to be of special historical or archeological interest. You start your tour at the Tourist Information Center and make your way around the town from there. It is interesting to see the different styles of the buildings ranging from the onset of the town to the mid 19th century.
