Bangor Hotels and Guest Houses

Bangor is located in the county of Gwynedd in Wales. Bangor is one of Britain's smallest cities. According to the 2001 Census the city's population was 13,725 but this does not include the roughly 10,000 college students that attend Bangor University, which was founding in 1884. Their presence really make Bangor a college town. The city has its origins dating back to when a monastery was started there in the early part of the 6th Century by the Celtic St. Deiniol.

The monastery was build where the now Bangor Cathedral stands. The Cathedral is a more recent structure compared to others in the city and has had many remodeling of the centuries. One of the oldest building in Britain is the Bishopric of Bangor. Also Bangor boast one of the longest High Streets that Wales has to offer. In 1557 the Friars School, a free grammar school, was founded. Bangor is located on Wales northern coast, near the Menai Strait. The Menai Strait separates Gwynedd form the Island of Anglesey.

Bangor Mountain sits to the city's main area's east side. Maesgerchen, a massive estate that was first built to house council members, is near Port Penrhyn east of Bangor Mountain. High Street is masked in the shadow of Bangor Mountain as well as the Hirael and Glan Adda areas. This shadow causes some areas, especially the High Street, to receive no direct sunlight from November until March of each year.

The is also a ridge that goes up to the north of High Street that splits the center of the city apart from the Menai Strait's south shore and the area is called Upper Bangor or Bangor Uchaf. There are two rivers that flow with in the city's boundaries. The River Cegin goes into Port Penrhyn at the city's eastern edge. While the River Adda has been culverted so that only a portion of it appears above the ground in the extreme western areas of the city by the Faenol Estate. During the 19th Century Port Penrhyn was a vital port for the area due to its exportation of the slate that was mined from the Penrhyn Quarry.
