The small town of Woodstock is located a mere 8 miles north of Oxford in Oxfordshire England. The town's existence was first mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book and was listed a royal forest. In the years since it has been the birthplace and prison place of many famous people. During the reign of Mary I her sister Princess Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Woodstock Manor gatehouse. Woodstock Manor was also the birthplace of Edward the eldest son of King Edward III. The town of Woodstock was the birthplace of Winston Churchill, who was born in Blenheim Palace.

Blenheim Palace is one of the first places many visitors stop because of its famous former inhabitant. This building was built between 1705 and 1724. This palace is the only non-Episcopal house in England to hold the coveted title of palace. It was built as a gift for John Churchill who was the first Duke of Marlborough. However, instead of a grateful national give, it became a point of contention leading to the Duke's exile. During their time in this home, Winston Churchill was born.

Another popular stop is Thomas Chaucer's Home. This home was the home of the son of poet Geofrey Chaucer, Thomas Chaucer. Thomas Chaucer, like his famous father, sat in Parliament and was even speaker of the house. Today the home is a popular stop for tourists. It isn't open to the public but you can go buy and view it from the road.

A great place to go and learn about the county of Oxfordshire is the Oxfordshire Museum. Here you discover the story of Oxfordshire. Wander through the eleven galleries and see the different exhibits. You can see exhibits on the history of the area, contemporary crafts and art, popular culture. Be sure that you to wander out into the gardens and see the beauty and the flora of the area. Not only can you see the beauty of the plants but you might also see some interesting pieces of art.

There are also a couple of villages nearby Woodstock. Here you can see some interesting shops and pubs. Stop by and see what types of unique shops they have to offer. While you're there be sure to check out the variety of eateries these towns have to offer. As well as their many architectural sites.
