Wolverhampton had a monastery consecrated there in 994 that was granted to Wulfruna. This is where the St. Peter's Church was erected that is still there today. Sir Charles Wheeler, a sculptor, made a statue of Lady Wulfruna that is located on the outside stairs of the church. The town was recorded as a market town in 1179 and by 1204 it had gotten notice form King John who because it had not been given a royal charter to hold a market. Eventually they did receive a charter in February of 1258 to hold a market on Wednesdays by Henry III.

The market took place throughout the 14th and 15 Centuries and made Wolverhampton a stable town for the wool trading industry. The importance of the wool industry during this time can still be seen by the woolpack that is part of the coat of arms for the town. Also the many small streets that lead to the town center where sheep were once herded to market bare names associated with the industry such as Farmers Fold, Woolpack Street and Woolpack Alley.

Sir Stpeh Jenyns who was once Lord Mayor of London and also twice the Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors was born here in 1512. He started the Wolverhampton Grammar School which is one of the oldest schools in Britain to still be in use. There were two major fires in Wolverhampton throughout the years. In April of 1590 was the first one and then in September of 1696. They first both started on what is now Salop Street. The 1590 fire went on for five days and destroyed the homes of almost 700 residents and the 1696 fire only got sixty houses while it last five hours. Due to the second fire the first fire engine was bought in September of 1703.

After the 16th Century the town was the location of many metal industries that made locks and keys as well as iron and brass. Thomas Smar and John Holyhead of Roweley Rigis, two farmers, were executed by hanging in January of 1606 at High Green which is now Green Square. They were hung for hiding some of the Gunpowder Plotters who had ran from the Midlands. While they had nothing to do with the original plot they were treated as traitors just the same.
