Coventry is the second largest city in the English county of West Midlands, after Birmingham. With a population of over 300,000, Coventry combines rustic charm with modern city life. In recent times, Coventry has extended great efforts into structural and cultural revitalization, such as pending projects surrounding of a major, European style boulevard and the restructuring and connecting of inchoate waterways. Residents and the happy tourist will find transportation abundant, especially in regards to rail and bus.

Visitors will find an eclectic and perhaps surprising array of artistic treats to accompany even a lengthy stay. The Belgrade Theatre, recently renovated as well, is one of the largest in the United Kingdom. The Coventry History Centre, useful for either tracing one's English roots or for simple appreciation, provides archive, film, census, and other substantial demographic information. Other fans of the deep historical roots of Coventry will find much fascination with the Lunt Roman Fort, which was once a major Roman Fort on the island in those centuries before the Normans and rise of Empire. One can tangibly observe, via reenactments and other features, what Roman military culture was like in Britannica.

For fans of aviation history, one need look no farther than the Midland Air Museum, and is a strong testament to the proud aviation past of Coventry. Many may not know that Coventry, as a pioneer even amongst English Industrialization, is the place of birth for the English motor industry. The Coventry Transport Museum offers a family friendly place for admiring the classics of British cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles. There are also numerous satellite libraries, in addition to a very large central library, containing close to half a million volumes.

As with many progressive cities, Coventry encourages its citizens to live healthy, active lives. The city hosts a half Marathon annually, which draws in much in of peripheral activities associated with the race. The Coventry Sports Trust offers and encourages a holistic approach to health, proper for adults and children, and every conceivable demographic. Of course, luxurious golf courses and leisure clubs abound in the beautiful countryside. Fitness clubs are also quite populous.

Coventry is also home to numerous parks and open areas, many (if not most) suitable and ideal for family outings. The Coombe Country Park offers several hundred acres of pristine scenery, ideal for a bucolic family picnic or get together. There are abundant areas dedicated to the play of children, and wildlife is protected and encouraged to thrive in the Coombe and other, similar parks.

Coventry is an ancient city, deep and rich in past tradition, and alive with modern flare. When travelling to West Midlands, don't simply visit Birmingham without recognizing the value of this local gem.
