Telford is a new town, and one which is quickly developing its status as an excellent place to live with a blossoming economic infrastructure which has helped improve and stabilize the standard of living alongside the quality of life of the inhabitants. The city derives its name from the famous civil engineer Thomas Telford and this is no small coincidence, for the town has always enjoyed a strong connection and affiliation with engineering as a whole.
The region has been blessed with an abundance of natural resources many of which would later then be relied upon most extensively in a bid to fuel the rapid expansion of the industrial revolution and so a number of iron smelting operations along with textile mills were established in the region.
The establishment of Telford as it stands today was no easy task and it was a conception that was riddled with public scandal (which prompted no less than three separate public inquiries) along with strong opposition from the public. Lauded by politicians as the way forward and an essential way to guarantee success and prosperity, many felt that the creation of Telford was nothing more than an exercise in slum clearances of inner city Birmingham which served as a major flashpoint within the town.
The town is only now beginning to find its feet with economic revival and stability which was strongly welcomed after the rocky and even disastrous beginning stages of the town's development, as the town had to endure an economic meltdown with record levels of unemployment during the black era of the 60's.
The Telford Shopping Centre is the central nerve system of the town serving as not only an important source of employment and retail services, but also the provision of entertainment and leisure activities including cinema, cafes and children's areas.
Telford Town Park has been the subject of a great deal of controversy over requirements that park wardens are to question unaccompanied adults who do not have children nearby with the power to evict said adult from the premises of the park. Such measures have prompted condemnation and outrage from the public.
