The historic market town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire still boasts a mainly unaltered medieval street plan and features over six hundred historic buildings. Even though Shrewsbury is home to hundreds of historic sites it serves as the commercial and cultural center for the county and a large area of mid-Wales.

Of the many historical sites to visit in Shrewsbury the Shrewsbury Abbey is one that shouldn't be missed. Built in 1083 this abbey has grown to become one of the most influential and important abbeys in the United Kingdom. Visitors can come and tour the abbey but it is requested that you contact the abbey's main office during business hours to set up the tour. You can come and worship at the abbey when it is open from 10:30 to 3:00pm daily but their morning prayers are said at 8:30 am. Sunday morning services are at 10am every Sunday for those that are interested.

Dating back to 1070 Shrewsbury Castle is another stop that many visitors make. Originally built mainly out of timber, the Shrewsbury Castle that is left today is a red sand stone structure that was restored in 1790. Visitors can tour the town and view a collection of weapons, uniforms and other great artifacts that date from the 1700s up to the present day.

If you plan on visiting the Shrewsbury area during August Bank Holiday be sure to check out the Shrewsbury Folk Festival. This festival is among the biggest festival held in the Midland area during the year. Acts change from year to year so check out their website prior to attending if you are interested in seeing what the schedule is going to be for this year's festival.

Another good three day festival to attend is the Shrewsbury International Street Theatre Festival. Visitors can enjoy a great deal of entertainment during which performers take to the streets. Great festivals and historic attractions aren't all there is to Shrewsbury. Nature lovers can enjoy the lovely country side during their stay. Hawkstone Park and Follies is a woodland area for visitors to enjoy. With Caves and cliffs there are many areas for visitors to explore. You will find paths that twist, turn, rise and fall giving you beautiful views and unexpected areas to discover. While visiting this park make sure you check out the monuments, tunnels and passageways many are associated with King Arthur himself.
