The royal burgh of Tain is located in the Ross and Cromarty area of the Scottish Highland. Tain is Scotland's oldest Royal Burgh having received their first royal charter in 1066. To commemorate this event in 1966, 900 years after they received the charter, the Rose Garden was opened by the Queen Mother herself. Prior to receiving the royal charter little is known of its history. There is belief that the town owed much of its importance to the early Christian figure Duthac whose shrine was considered very important by the time of the charter. Today there are many areas in and around Tain that are interesting to visitors.
While you are in Tain you might want to treat yourself to a little leisure time. Here at the Tain Royal Academy there is a fitness suit, small gym, and a twenty-meter swimming pool for you to enjoy. If you are interested in Tennis there is also a local tennis club as well as a bowling club and kempo club. And for the golfer there is an impressive golf course for you to take advantage of. If you in town during the Football season, you might want to take in a game. Tain is home to the Thistle Football Club which plays in the North Caledonian league.
Train enthusiasts will enjoy the Tain railway system. This system is a unmanned system and is a major draw for Tain. Take a ride on their automated system and enjoy the sites of Tain and the surrounding area.
Also there is the town museum to visit. Here you can see exhibits that teach you about the history of Tain. The "Tain Through Time" display is popular and shows the details of the town's history. It's a great way to learn about this historic town and spend a day.
Of course when one comes to a town one expects to be able to find something tasty. You can have your pick of the variety of restaurants and fast food stops while you are here. But if you are interested in local cheese then head over to the Highland Fine Cheese shops. This cheese factory has fresh local cheeses for you to enjoy. All visitors should make a stop here.
Of course this is the Scottish Country side and it wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of the castles. There are several castles in the area including the Ballone Castle, Dunrobin Castle and the Blanagown Castle. But you might want to spend the night in a castle and you can actually do that here. The Skibo Castle and the Carbidale Castle have both been turned into spots where tourists can rest their heads. The Caribdale Castle is a youth hostel while Skibo is an actual hotel.
