Aviemore, located in the Highlands of Scotland, is more than just an idyllic town; it is also a Scottish tourist resort, and happens to be located within the bounds of a magnificent Scottish Natural Park (Cairngorms). Other than the sheer abundance of natural beauty, Aviemore offers many activities for folks of all backgrounds and interests.

Though dependent upon the weather like all such resorts, Aviemore offers a skiing resort, set in the stark ruggedness of the Highlands. This offers a somewhat different experience than other, more "main path" ski locations such as the Alps. One definitely needs to experience it to fully appreciate the distinctiveness. While skiing isn't for everyone, the town offers abundant trails for walking and hiking, not to mention mountain biking. Indeed, the natural terrain is conducive to imbibing nature while exercising outdoors. Horse riding is also popular, as is also fishing on the river Spey. It must be noted that the waterways are worth the trip alone, and is home to every conceivable kind of water sport and leisure. What better way to appreciate the Highlands than from a Scottish Loch!; in this case, Loch Insh.

Of course, Scotland is known as the homeland of one of the world's great sports; Golf! Aviemore is home to several courses in varying degrees of difficulty. One's trip can be built around golfing alone, and with the Cairngorm park and mountains in the backdrop, this is simply another logical choice for a holiday.

When time to settle in and just breath in the clean air, one's thoughts may turn to food; Aviemore is home to an eclectic mix of food, ranging from traditional Scottish cooking to niche specialties, such as Asian fare. There are several pubs in the area, and many offer, along with excellent Scottish spirits and ale, good, honest food to compliment one's drink. Cafes are also available, sure to meet anyone's taste for coffee or tea (and perhaps a sandwich).

Should one find the rain interfering with the abundant outdoor plans, why not tour a whiskey distillery, or take the family to one of the many local museums. One that is especially family friendly is the Highland Folk Museum, whose massive size is purported to keep a family busy for hours. Several other museums contain interesting bits and nuances of Highland history, which would be especially interesting to those with roots in the Highlands, or those more historically inclined.

Finally, please appreciate the stunning wildlife that makes Aviemore its home. Scores of birds and marine life make their home here, not to mention furry sorts such as the native red squirrel. Safaris are also offered, as many exotic animals are also kept here. Bring a journal and a good pair of binoculars, and simply enjoy.

"Simply enjoy" could be the theme for this lovely town. Enjoy!
