Known as the official gateway to the North York Moors National Park, Pickering is located between York and Scarborough. The beauty of the North York Moor adds to Pickering's appeal to many day trippers. With rolling hills, valleys, rivers and the abundant wildlife it is little wonder why Pickering is popular during the summer months.

While in the Pickering area, stop by the Beck Isle Museum. The Beck Isle Museum is located in a Regency residence on the outskirts of Pickering. In the early 1800's England's first agricultural institute was planned her. The house contains collections related to rural living and crafts. Spanning nearly 200 years the collection reflects local life, customs, and developments in domestic life during this time. It is an interesting site for visitors of the area to see.

For those who are interested in theatre, the Kirk Theatre is the place to go. Housed in a converted Methodist Chapel the Kirk Theatre is home of the Pickering Musical Society. At various times throughout the year the musical society gives performances. Visitors can enjoy a musical evening.

There is also a beauty of the area. Helmsley Walled Garden is a five acre walled garden for you to enjoy the great outdoors easily. Located with Helmsley Castle in the background, this breath taking garden give you a place to enjoy a nice afternoon and purchase local fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

For those that visit the Pickering area during the right time of year they could enjoy the Ryedale Festival. This festival is set in Ryedale's many country houses and offers attendees classical, jazz, theatre, art and other concerts.

For many a train ride is a must when visiting different areas. The Pickering area is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway operates along the line between Pickering and village of Grosmont. It passes through the North York Moors national Park, wooded valley and into the clad moorland. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing tour of the beautiful scenery that makes Pickering and North York so special.

Among the most spectacular homes in the Pickering area is Castle Howard. Visitors can tour the castle and garden. While at the castle visitors can enjoy a meal and nearby shopping.

If you are interest in the World War Two you can visit the Eden Camp Modern History Museum. Here you can experience the sounds, smells and sights of those years. This museum gives visitors and idea of what a World War Two Prisoner of War Camp was like. All war enthusiasts will want to visit this museum.
