The market town of Bedale is located in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire in England. The town was originally located in the Richmondshire but the county lines have been re arranged since then. The town was once held by Torpin before the Harrying of the North. The parish church that is located here is also from the days of Torpin as is evidence in its crypt. The lands and area was given to Bodin of Middleham during which a market town was founded. The market was confirmed with a charter by Henry III.
There are many interesting sites to see in Bedale. One popular site is the Heritage Trail. This trail was designed by the local Heritage trust and provides visitor with a wonderful insight in the Bedale's past. The Heritage Trail wanders around the town showing you the various points of interest such as the Leech House and the "harbor". The tour of the town is a great way to get a feel of the town.
One of the many interesting sights that you might see during your trek through town is the Archway. This arch was closed in 1777 but was where the old Lancaster coach road passed through. It is an interesting architecture for you to take in during your trip.
The Amen House and coach house were built in the 1770s were once part of the old Peirse Racing Stud. Peirse's horses won the races of 1817, 188, and 1819. The race of 1819 was rerun due to a complaint and in the re-run Mr. Pierse's horse Wrangler lost. The horse that won the first race became known as Peirse Stakes and became the first stud that Tattersalls came out of London to sell a horse. While you are checking out the Amen House be sure to check out the large Ice House. It was a large underground structure that was built in 1770s to preserve and store food in.
Another popular stop is the Wynd. The Wynd is a Methodist Chapel that is a popular stop for visitors. It's architecture is wonderful to see. Anyone interested in church structure really needs to make this one of the stops on your trip.
The Leech House is also another site that draws in the visitors. The Leech House can be seen from the Bedale bridge. This little castellatedos is the only one of its kind. It is called the leech house because it was used for the storing of leeches during the time period when leeches were used commonly in medical practice.
