Aberdeenshire's largest settlement is Peterhead. Also known as Blue Toon, the town is located on the mainland's eastern most part. Peterhead, as many of these towns, started off as a fishing harbour. Founded by fishermen in the 16th Century, Peterhead was developed as a planned settlement. As the town grew the need for a lifeboat station grew and Peterhead established their lifeboat station in 1865. By 1888 the convict prison was opened and it quickly became known as one of Scotland's toughest prisons.
