Nuneaton Hotels and Guest Houses

Nuneaton is located roughly nine miles north of Coventry and twenty east of Birmingham plus one-hundred and three northwest of London. Through the town runs the River Anker. The Office for National Statistics puts the population at over seventy thousand but the estimate for 2008 was over seventy three thousand. Although neither of these amounts add in the Camp Hill area which is part of the town as well, its population is believed to be more than an additional twelve thousand.

Bedworth, Hinkley and Atherstom are some towns that are very close. Lutterworth and Tamworth a not very far either. Coventry is the closest city and is about seven miles from the center of town. Mount Jud is a local landmark that is located just northwest of the town and can be viewed for up to miles away. There are many viewpoints at the edge of town that are Ordnance Survey recognized. One of the most well known is on the west part of Harshill Hayes Country Park. If you are viewing it form north of Atherston it is seen as well as from Leicester's northeast.

The name of Nuneaton is derived from the Benedictine nunnery that was there in the 12 Century and the town developed around it. Parts of the nunnery are still there today. It was previously Etone, a settlement whose name mean water town. The Domesday Book has Nuneaton as a small hamlet. In 1233 a market was set up there and still continues today. In 1247 was when the town had a name on record for the first time of Nonne Eton. In 1539 Hebr the VIII dissolved the monasteries and the nunnery fell to disrepair.

A royal charter was given in 1552 to the King Edward VI School. It was turned into a sixth form college in 1974. There were several grammar schools started from 1944 through 1974 including the Nuneaton High School for Girls. In 1994 the college was made a Grammar School for boys which was owned by the local KEGS but Grammar was never officially part of its name. There is also an early comprehensive school in Bedworth called Chamberlain.
