Farnham Hotels and Guest Houses

Farnham has a vast and deep history that is said to go back tens of thousands of years ago. It is believed that Paleolithic and early Stone Age hunters were in the are. There have been evidence of their tools as well as their kills. The first settlement that is know for sure was there nearly 7,000 years ago during the Mesolithic period. Artifacts from some pit dwellings as well as of the flint napping industry have been discovered near Farnham just east of town.

During the Bronze Age the population of the area grew even more. On Crooksbury Hill there have been two bronze hoards uncovered with even more artifact found elsewhere. One of the sites is Green Lane which is in Farnham Park close to the Bourne Spring. There is a great deal of Bronze Age barrows located in the area that includes a the triple barrow found at Elstead. Near Tilford at Stoneyfield there is a cemetery full of urns.

Botany Hills is the home of forts from the early Iron Age, just south of Farnham as well as at Upper Hale which is to the north. Upper Hale is on a high promontory and is a huge earthwork. It is supplied by a spring that comes out from the middle of two massive rocks called Jock and Jenny Stones. There are other earthworks on Crooksbury Hill called Soldier's Ring that are from later in the Iron age. There is a hut from the 1st century that was found in Bourne Spring as well as even more artifacts from this time at Green Lane.

The Roman period saw the district become a center for pottery. This is because of the massive gault clay supply, the readily available supply of wood for fuel and the ease of transport provided by the Harrow Way. The Harrow Way was a Roman road that was close by. It went form Silchester to Chichester. Kilns that date back to 100 AD have been discovered all of the town. There was still domestic pottery being made at the Alice Holt potteries until 400 AD.
