The race course set up shop in its current location in 1776 at which time Colonel Anthony St. Leger began races that had five horses in them. This has since become the world's oldest classic horse race and is still being done today. During WWI race horses were utilized in the military and from 1915 to 1918 substitute races took place in Newmarket.
In 2007 the race course underwent major renovations. It received a new exhibition center, blood stock sales, stable and grandstand. In August of 2007 it had its first trail run and reopened fully in September. The Princess Royal helped reopen the race course with the presentation of a traditional Doncaster sweet of Parkinson's Butterscotch.
