The City of Canterbury has been inhabited since prehistoric times, Canterbury has been recorded as the main settlement of the Cantiaci. It was then captured by the Romans who set up streets in the grid pattern, set up a temple, public baths, and a theatre. Then in 597AD Pop Gregory the Great Saint Augustine over to convert King Ethelberht to Christianity. After this Augustine chose Canterbury as the Episcopal see in and built a cathedral and abbey.

Of course the first place that many people stop is Canterbury Cathedral. Canterbury Cathedral is the "Mother Church of the Anglican community." Built in the 600sAD it is believed to be built on a former Saxon cathedral. The cathedral has a colourful history and was partially destroyed in the Second World War. Since 2006, a fundraising appeal has been in motion to restore this historic building to its original beauty. Since much of the cathedral's stonework is damaged, the cathedral fund needs around fifty million pounds to restore it.

Canterbury Norman Castle is also another popular stop. The castle was constructed in 1080 by the Normans as a fortification to replace their earlier motte and bailey fortification. The Keep was then constructed around 100 years later during the reign of Henry I. Now it's opened for visitors to enjoy touring during the day. Entry is free and the building is opened most days from 8am until dusk, normally around 5 in the evening.

The city was engraved in literary history with the story Canterbury Tales. Now you can take a step into the tales. The Canterbury Tales is housed inside the church of St Margaret's located in the heart of old Canterbury. Follow the stories of the pilgrims as they make their way to Canterbury Cathedral. All of their stories are re-created with all the fun of the Canterbury Tales. There are many differ well known celebrities providing the characterizations. You can also enjoy it in French, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, German, and Spanish. There is even a commentary for children so that they can follow the story.

The Canterbury Historic River tour is a great way to fully tour the town. For thirty minutes the visitors will wonder the city and see wonderful sites such as the hospital, the cathedral, and the King's Bridge. You start at the small island at one end of the city known as the Greyfriars which is home to a pleasant little chapel that was built in the 13th century. The tours take place from April to September and leave every fifteen to twenty minutes. If you have a large group, twelve or more people, you do not need to book in advance. Large groups are advised to book in advance.
