The cathedral city of Winchester in Hampshire England is known for being home to one of the largest cathedrals in all of England. With a history that dates back to the Iron Age there are many historic sites in this busy city.

The major attraction in Winchester is of course Winchester Cathedral. This ancient building has been in use for well over a thousand years. Home to many twelfth century paintings, contemporary art, and medieval carvings that would make even the least religious want to make a stop at the massive and beautiful building. The cathedral also offers a free children's trail which gives families an informative and fun look at the Cathedral. It also lets them meet the many of the characters associated with its past and present. There are many events that take place at the cathedral throughout the year which include classical concerts, open air theater, themed lunches, exhibitions and a christmas market.

The cathedral isn't the only stop to make while visiting Winchester. The Westgate is another popular stop. The former medieval gateway was once used as a debtor's prison. Today visitors can come and see the Westgate Museum's unique collection of weights and measures. They can also view a Tudor ceiling, armor and a gibbet. Trek to the rooftop for spectacular city views before leaving this historic monument.

What is an ancient city without its legends? Winchester is just one of those cities. Just to the left of the Westgate you will find the remains of Winchester Castle. The Great Hall, which is about all that remains aside from Sally Port, is considered one of the finest and largest in England. It is also home to King Arthur's legendary Round Table. The legendary table is still on display for all to view. It is a must stop during your stay in Winchester.

For the nature lover, a good stop is Marwell Wildlife. Here you can view over two hundred rare species of animals. See snow leopards, rhinos, meerkats, zebras, tigers and many more. Tour the world of Lemurs and the Encounter village where the domesticated species reside. Marwell is dedicated to conserving the many rare species found worldwide. It is a neat place to visit.

The literary enthusiast should make a point to stop by Jane Austen's house. This house is the seventeenth century home where Ms Austen lived between 1809 and 1817. In this house she wrote six of her great novels. Here you can see copies of letters, pictures and other memorabilia tied to the great author. There is a large collection of documentary material on sight as well.

Once you've finished perusing Ms. Austen's former residence check out the Chawton House Library. This library houses a collection of rare women's writings and is housed in the former home of Ms. Austen's brother Edward Austen-Knight. The collection ranges from the 1600 to 1830 and gives visitors an opportunity to experience these historic texts in this wonderful place.

Winchester is not just a town of deep historical roots such as King Arthur and Jane Austen but a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the beauty.
