The West Midlands region is home to the county town of Stafford. The town was originally settled on the island in the middle of the marshes of the River Sow in 913. Today the town has been moved slightly to the south because of the potential of flooding. There are many different things for visitors to see and do in the town of Stafford.

St. Chad's church is the oldest building in Stafford. Built in the 12th century the church is a work of art in its own right. The main part of the church has rich patterns and figures that have been carved into the archways and pillars. Until reason that visitors can see these beautiful carvings is because of the restoration work that the church underwent in the 1800s. In the 17th and 18th centuries the carvings were covered up with stone work. Visitors can enjoy the wonderful works.

Also a popular place for visitors is the Stafford Castle ruins. The site was originally home to a wooden castle in the early 1100s; it was mostly destroyed and replaced by stone in 1347. By the end of the 1400's, however, the castle was pretty much abandoned and fell in disrepair. In the early 19th century the castle was rebuilt partially. But once again the castle was abandoned. The ruined remains of the Gothic Revival style castle can be seen from the M6 motorway and is open to visitors. Touring the ruins can give visitors the opportunity to see a piece of history for themselves.

For those interested in some of the other historic buildings in the city can visit the Shire Hall. This building once served as the court house for the town and is considered a Grade 2 historic building. The public can access two of the old court rooms and an old holding cell. Here you can see an exhibition of the history of the building and enjoy a guided tour of the building.

If you are interested in nature, then head over to Victoria Park. Opened in 1908 this 13 acre riverside park is not only rich in beautiful scenery but lots of fun areas too. With bird cages, an open-air paddling pool, green houses, play areas and bowling green families can sit back and relax or burn of that excited energy in this relaxing setting.

Stafford, filled with historic buildings it is a visitors delight.
