The landlocked city of Manchester boarders Cheshire, Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Merseyside, and Lancashire and is the third most populous area in the United Kingdom. The county of Greater Manchester wasn't actually established until 1974, but the area has been settled since prehistoric times. Now Manchester is a bustling place for visitors and residents.

One of the things that Manchester is known for is the premier football clubs. Manchester Untied and Manchester City, are two of the most well known football leagues in the area. Manchester United is the largest football league in the United Kingdom while Manchester City is considered to be one of the richest football clubs in the United Kingdom because of the wealthy owners.

Manchester is also home to several museums and galleries. Thanks to the rich Roman history there are many museums that celebrate the industrial revolution, Trade Union, and women's suffrage. The Museum of Science and Industry is home to many of the collections of the industrial exhibits. Here you can see a large collection of steam locomotives, aircrafts and other industrial machinery. While the Museum of Transportation house historic buses and trams for visitors to see.

Manchester is also home to many theatres. Visitors can take in a variety of shows during their stays, comedies, dramas, operas and more. For a large scale production you might want to visit the Palace Theater or The Royal Exchange Theater both of which show a variety of plays and operas. For those who are looking for a more intimate setting you might check out the Library Theater which is a smaller space located in the basement of the Central library. Dance aficionados need to check out the Dancehouse for dance productions.

Manchester also has a hopping night scene. There are many public houses, clubs, and bars for visitors to choose from. With more than 500 to choose from there is literally something for everyone. During the 1980s one of the major clubs that seemed to be the starting place for many popular groups of the time was rumored to have organized crime ties. The club closed in the mid 90s but the reputation for Manchester clubs to be a starting ground for new groups has not gone away. If you are looking for a club that is unique then you need to check out the Northern Quaret of the city for the quirkiest bars in town.

Manchester is also known for having a larger gay community to. The Canal Street area is known for its gay bars, clubs and yes even supermarkets. For fans of the show Queer as Folk the series was set in the Canal Street area.
