Maldon is a small English town on the Blackwater estuary in the county of Essex. The charter in 1970 between the Dutch town of Cuijk and Maldon tie them as twin cities.
The literal meaning of the town's name is crudely translated as 'meeting place on the hill', which almost conveys the ambiance and environment of Maldon. The early history of the town dates back to the 5th century and throughout the course of time Maldon saw many ups and downs.
One of the key distinctions of the town is connected with the barges. Leading experts in the barges sailing flock to the town to indulge in this activity and some of the very rare known professional sailing can be enjoyed in Maldon. The mega event takes place every year and professional sailors display their skilled performances. The prize is awarded to the top three finalists. Maldon administration deserves full credit for providing world class sailing experience to the sailors and the enthusiasts alike.
It is been over half century that a unique event known as Taxi Day is held in Maldon. The underlying theme of this event is to provide the physically handicapped children living in London a free taxi ride through Maldon. Local people show their generosity by providing excellent environment for the incoming children.
Maldon -Essex's other celebrated event is known as the Victorian Evening. The local population dress in Victorian clothing in December and the whole town portrays a picture of Victorian era. Tourists are invited to participate in this event and many exhibitions are held to entertain the incoming visitors.
