Being close to the river, Maidenhead is something of a center for rowing activity and excellence, with many who have Olympic or professional aspirations continue to view the town as something of a proving ground, and at the very least amongst the best when it comes to preparation. The local football team is of course strongly supported by the local populace. Other water activities, such as sailing, are also very popular. Maidenhead's Railway Bridge, known throughout the United Kingdom, leaves an indelible mark on the bustling activity along the Thames. Needless to say, rail and water are very popular ways to travel, and are plentiful. Several areas just outside of Maidenhead, such as Cookham, are more traditional English Villages that see and welcome plenty of traffic from travelers. Whether sightseeing or looking for traditional English fare, don't be afraid to wander. Though accessible by rail, one can make the journey on foot in around an hour, and can enjoy the river the entire time.
Those who enjoy theatre and cinema won't want to pass by the Norden Farm arts centre, as well as the Odeon mainstream cinema. The Maidenhead Heritage Centre serves as a convenient stop for not only souvenirs, but also a convenient repository of town and regional history. The food in Maidenhead is rich and varied, from Indian to Thai to traditional English Pub Food. It must be mentioned that nearby village of Bray is home to a restaurant known as the Fat Duck, a three Michelin Star experience that consistently ranks amongst the five best restaurants in the world. Self catering apartments and hotels are plentiful, with varying ranges of price. Though some might be tempted to call Maidenhead simply a commuters paradise for London, this town and region contains much more.
