Five miles from the northern shore of Scotland is the town of Dunfermline Fife. Dunfermline dates back to the early 500's AD and was the center of the Culdee faith. The town didn't have an "official" name, however until it was called Dunferelitane by David II in 1128. The town name of Dunfermline was officially adopted much later in 1609. The town was considered the seat of royal power during the mid 11th century, and was even considered the de facto capital of Scotland until James I was assassinated in 1437. Thanks to its rich history the town has many things for visitors to see and do.
Probably one of the most well known people of our modern times was born right here in Dunfermline. Andrew Carnegie, the famous business man and philanthropist was not only born here but was also raised in this area. Carnegie, as most know, was a central figure in the early 1900s for promoting urban renewal, especially in his home town. Today visitors can view the home that he was born in. At the Birthplace Memorial Hall you can wander the rooms and see many of the treasures that Carnegie was presented with during his life time. This two story cottage has been completely restored to the beauty it was when Carnegie was born. If you visit the museum from April to October be sure to go on the first Friday of the month if possible. That way you can enjoy a wonderful weaving demonstration right on the ground floor.
Another place of great interest is the Dunfermline Abbey. The original abbey dates back to the mid 11th century and was built by King David I to honor his mother Queen Margaret. The abbey has had a profound Christian influence over the town even all these centuries later. Services and a variety of organizational life is still held here. The outstanding architecture of the existing abbey is a thing of absolute beauty. It is home to many royal tombs including that of King Robert of Bruce. You can also find some very unique collector's items at their local shop.
If you are looking for some fun then head out to Knockhill. Knockhill is home to a fun Motorsport Centre. You can take in the fun of the motorsport by sitting on the sunny hillside and watch the excitement. For the car lover it can make for a great way to spend a day.
